| 350 bales and all shaped right | 2008-07-21 10:14:31 |
| This cutting of hay went very well. We cut and baled 350 bales. These bales are slightly smaller then normal, and not packed very tight. I installed the missing set of feeder teeth and that seems to have made all the difference needed to get good consistent shape in the bales. Although they are packed light, they are square and hold together well. I also changed the way the bale chute is configured so that they don't bind as much coming out. This helps with the consistency too. As always happens, it was the hottest days this year. Deb, Ben, Anthony (Ben's friend) and Colton did the baling while I was still at work. It we want to do more, there is still half a field left. | |
| Hay - Round Two | 2008-07-14 17:02:38 |
| Looks like we have a window to try and do hay again. I cut last night (Sunday) and it isn't supposed to rain again until Saturday night. I am going to go home and cut some more tonight. We will be baling over two nights later this week. I had to follow up on some parts I ordered for the baler. Deb is going to go pick them up so we are ready. I sure won't make the wet mistake again. | |

| The new garden I started this year is not doing too well. Although some of the seeds germinated at an acceptable rate, most of them did not. Granted I used a planter I hadn't used before so they might have been a little deep. That doesn't account for the one's a planted by hand that also didn't come up. I would say we are going to get about 30% of the planted seeds, grow to maturity. Then we'll see what the deer get. The popcorn is doing the best, followed by the Pinto Beans. We are getting a good turn out on the winter squash, but zip on the cucumbers (how do you fail to grow a weed like cucumbers???). Zip on the luffa and the spagetti squash, Hasta La Pasta. I just hope we get some of the Jacobs and Great White Northern beans. | |

| Looks like new.... | 2008-06-24 11:02:55 |
| Last year I painted the back blade for the tractor. The year before I painted some implements green. This year, I am painting mostly red. On the list of things to paint this year are the garden clutivator (for the garden tractor), the plow, and the disk. The cultivator and the plow are done. The disk is next. I think I will paint it green. I can only handle so much red. ~P | |

| Messed up sense of timing | 2008-06-24 09:57:20 |
| I was listening to the radio this past weekend and a particular add registered in my brain. It wasn't the product, but the message that resonated a dull thud in the back of my brain. They were talking about summer, and how summer is a time to relax and kick back. A time to play at doing nothing. Well leave it to me to see the falicy in that. From the stand point of those producing the food for this world of hungry selfish city slickers, summer is the busiest time of year. Planting, caring, harvesting...all these things happen while the rest of you are at the park eating tube steak's and sitting in your Chinease lounge chairs. I don't farm full time, by any means, but I can sure tell you that winter is the time to rest. No wonder farmers go to Florida during the winter. It is the only time they can. ~P. | |
